"School starts tomorrow and I don't know what to wear first!" - Weston, 9 years old, about Back-to-School shopping

The dust has settled and there are nothing but smiles and a few sore feet after the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix (BGCMP) hosted its annual Back-to-School Shopping Day on August 20, at JCPenney. The BGCMP also unveiled it's brand new mini bus donated by Checker Auto Parts.

This year 98 kids from central and west Phoenix communities received the opportunity for the shopping spree of a lifetime in preparation for the new school year. Kids were paired with a volunteer who took them shopping for school clothes and supplies.

Kids and volunteers alike had a great time, as it became typical to hear the kids say “shopping is my favorite thing to do” and “we just keep coming back for more” from board members. Volunteers return year after year to this heartfelt event. Special thanks to Mountain Telecommunications, Bell Automotive Products, Robson Communities and Sucato Masonry for each sponsoring more than five children at the event.

The kids were able to walk out of the store with bags-full of new clothing and new haircuts thanks to the generosity of the BGCMP Board of Directors and JCPenney Paradise Valley Mall location. JCPenney pulled out all the stops again this year donating new backpacks (purchased through employee contributions), providing free hair cuts and offering a 20-30 percent discount on all items!

Some lucky kids also got to ride in a brand new mini bus donated by Checker Auto Parts, the familiar local retail chain owned by Phoenix-based CSK Auto, Inc.

BGCMP unveils strategic plan

The volunteers and staff of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix are proud to share with you highlights of the organization's new strategic plan. A thorough analysis of the organization resulted in a comprehensive, multiyear tool to help guide us into the future. The Clubs have benefited the youth in our community for over 57 years. Utilizing the planning and vision of the strategic plan, we will continue to ensure that at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix, Kids Come First!

Our vision is that all kids should have a safe and enriching environment to enjoy their childhood while learning to make positive choices.

Our mission is to inspire and enable youth in our community, especially those faced with difficult and challenging circumstances, to realize their individual potential while learning responsible citizenship.

Our core values are

  • Kids Come First.
  • Practice What We Teach.
  • Aspire to New Heights.

BGCMP Steel Pan Drum Band

The BGCMP Steel Pan Drum Band consists of club members living in south Phoenix ages 7 to 14. The band has proven to be a positive and rewarding activity that also provides valuable study skills and a strong sense of discipline and responsibility. Playing the steel drum band serves as an excellent introduction to music and the creative arts for students who have been intimidated by standard musical forms.

The BGCMP Steel Pan Drum Band is currently scheduling performances to help raise funds to travel to Port of Spain, Trinidad W.I. and participate in a musical training with steel pan drum masters. This trip will be a reward for the kids hard work and dedication, a once in a lifetime opportunity for them!

Help the kids earn this fabulous opportunity by hosting a fun event for your party or corporate function. Schedule a half-hour performance for $500. Please call (602)954-8182.

Catch the band in action September 10th when they open for The Beach Boys! for more information click here.

Club & Board Members Visit Phoenix Art Museum

ArtWeb is a BGCMP program that begins with a literary experience, moves into a studio experience, then follows with a field trip to a local cultural venue (museum, botanical garden) to view a particular exhibition and work in a children's studio culminating in an exhibition of work. The pieces posted here are a result of an ArtWeb program centered around a recent exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum. After studying about their favorite artist & technique, talented young artists recreated their versions of the Masters. To view more samples of these paintings please click here.

BGCMP recipient of Power Hour Grant supported by JCPenney Afterschool Fund.

The BGCMP is proud to announce that it is the recipient of a $5,000 Power Hour grant supported by the JCPenney Afterschool Fund.  This highly effective homework assistance program is based on the premise that youngsters need to view homework as an opportunity to learn how to work independently, to learn how to successfully complete projects on time and to enable them to feel positive about their accomplishments.

Power Hour is an interactive after-school homework assistance program for children, ages 6 – 18.  Unlike assignments in class, Power Hour is conducted in a non-threatening, after-school environment using “Homework Helpers,” adults or older students to supervise completion of a Club member’s homework.  Extensive research has repeatedly shown that good after-school education programs can raise math and reading performance, improve school attendance, decrease students’ involvement in crime and reduce dropout rates.

Volunteer of the month

The BGCMP is proud to recognize volunteer Executive Council Member, James Dew.

Dew has been a member of the Executive Council at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix since 1996 and has been awarded the groups’ most prestigious award, the Steve Schwanz Top Producer Award three years in a row.

“Jim has taken our golf tournaments to new levels; he has played an integral part in the continuing improvement of our special events,” said Tony Sokolowski Director of the Executive Council.

Kid of the month

The BGCMP is proud to recognize I.G. Homes Member Pedro Corral. Seven-year-old Pedro has been a member of the Club for one year.

The youngest of four children, Pedro is very mature for his age. He is very helpful around the Club and has really made an effort to get to know all the staff members. He is also excited to participate in all core areas at the Club.

Pedro is a courageous and happy child who puts on a smile even in the most challenging situations. We're very happy to name Pedro kid of the month because he's such a great kid!
