When Jaylyn was selected as the 2005 Kid of the Year, he was both honored and terrified to deliver his speech. The staff's positive reinforcement boosted Jaylyn's self confidence and provided him with the tools necessary to overcome his fears and trust himself. When Jaylyn took the stage to deliver his speech, he didn't think twice about where his new-found confidence came from. When kids first walk through the doors of the Boys & Girls Club, they may not be looking to develop their character and leadership skills -- they are a natural result of their participation at the Club.
Through programs, activities, and interactions, the Club helps children develop a positive self-identity and values that enable them to become responsible citizens and leaders who make meaningful contributions to live successful lives.
With the goal to develop leaders in our community, the Character & Leadership Development core program empowers youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process, and respect their own and others' cultural identities.
Through a variety of programs, the caring mentors and role models at the Club inspire children to become successful leaders in their communities. These programs include:
| Youth of the Year program | Teen Supreme |
| Kid of the Year program | Kids Voting Arizona |
| Keystone Club | Junior staff program |
| Torch Club |
