A New School Year is Here - Help Kids Succeed in the Classroom!
For most kids, starting a new school year brings excitement, new adventures, and of course new school supplies! But for many of the kids we serve, going back to school can be stressful and intimidating, since many families simply cannot afford the cost of basic school supplies.
We’re committed to ensuring that all kids have the backpacks and school supplies they need to start the year confident and ready to learn and support from our wonderful partners is helping make it happen:
Apollo Group/University of Phoenix employees donated 27,104 items. Dozens of Apollo Group volunteers also spent two days sorting supplies and stuffing backpacks for kids in need. Novartis and Ross Stores also made special deliveries of dozens of backpacks and supplies for young learners!
We’ve collected lots of supplies, but we still have a long way to go! Here are some simple ways you can help make a difference:
- Support the school supply drive at your local Staples store now through September 17th by purchasing and donating new school supplies right in the store! All supplies donated through the “Staples for Students” campaign will be delivered to our Clubs and go directly to kids in need. Visit www.staplesforstudents.org to learn more.
- Shop at JCPenney stores now through August 31st and round your purchases to the next dollar to support JC Penney’s “Pennies from Heaven” campaign. Funds will be donated to Boys & Girls Clubs to support after-school programs for kids. Click jcp.com/pennies for more information.
Keystone Teens Host Health Fair
Teen leaders-in-training from our Peoria/Wisotsky Branch and Louis & Elizabeth Sands Branch hosted a community health fair in Peoria on July 23, 2011. The Health Fair attracted more than 400 local residents and featured booths from dozens of local community resources, providing free services such as vision exams, sports physicals, nutrition information, and many other health-related topics. The Health Fair also gave free backpacks and school supplies to kids. Keystone Club teens from both branches were responsible for designing and implementing every aspect of the project, from contacting community organizations and collecting in-kind donations to coordinating logistics and providing refreshments.
